Says Feddersen, “With enhanced production methods, prices have continued to drop, and today these plants are available to everyone. In fact, orchids have recently overtaken poinsettias as the largest nursery cash crop in the United States.” Today, Feddersen houses three to four thousand orchids in 600 square feet of greenhouse space in Califon, NJ. He regularly speaks at orchid societies and exhibits at orchid shows weekly, carefully transporting these special plants in a van with no back seats. Although this pursuit is different in most every way from his former corporate life, Feddersen is embracing the change. On January 3rd , he registered Fair Orchids as a business and set up his website. To fill in the gaps he also began work as a handyman, another skill he learned growing up. His early years, it seems, prepared him well. His father and grandfather would be proud. Ellen Donker is the publisher and editor-in-chief of Matters Magazine.
