Moore, a corporate president, purchased the property in 1944 for $16,000. In 1948, he sold it to securities analyst Samuel S. Hill, who lived there with his family until his wife’s death in 1962. A few owners later, Gregor and Alessandra Wenke purchased the house in 1971, and it was to remain in their family for 45 years. They and their four children had come to America from the Ukraine as displaced persons in 1949, after enduring difficult times during and after World War II. They moved to Newark, where Gregor sold produce; in 1959 he opened WEDA Meat Products on Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, retiring in 1971. Gregor and Alessandra, who were very involved with the local Ukrainian community, remained in the house until their deaths in 1995 and 1996. Their son, Rafael Wenke, now over 80, continued to live there until 2016. A graduate of the Mannes College of Music and longtime staff member of the Ukrainian Music Institute, Wenke has appeared on radio and television and as a soloist at many concert halls, Above: This stunning leaded glass window is featured in the dining room.
