Otherwise, Ward left little di- rection for his executors. He died in 1920, having told no one about his unusual bequest (including disappointed relatives who tried to break the will). His final years, spent living comfortably in the Es- sex Club in Newark, were devoted to books, boating and traveling. An avid reader and art collector, he left his library to the New Jer- sey Historical Society and his art to the Newark Museum. A knowledge- able birder and skilled boater, Ward spent many summers at Tuckertown on the Jersey Shore and kept a house- boat on Barnegat Bay.
