The Durand-Hedden House, 523 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood will host From Fleece to Cloth on April 30 from 1 - 4 p.m. Explore the wonder of how cloth is made. Cloth begins with thread, often spun from wool and the source of the wool is often sheep. Spinning – twisting fiber-like wool into useable thread or yarn and weaving with the thread to create cloth – dates back thousands of years. Watch a shearer collect the wool by shearing the fleece of two woolly-coated visitors from Kafka Farms. Members of the Essex County Spinners Guild will demonstrate that the craft of hand spinning to create yarn from a sheep’s fleece is alive and well. Weaving students from Columbia High School’s fiber program will show the basics of how thread is woven together into cloth and lead young visitors in a weaving activity. Durand- Hedden’s frame loom, spinning wheels and other apparatus, once commonplace in 18th and 19th century houses, will be showcased.
