March by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, Nate Powell This series of three graphic novels tells the story of John Lewis, one of the heroes of the Civil Rights Move- ment of the 1960s, beginning with his march on the Ed- mund Pettis Bridge in Selma, and ending with Lewis, now a U.S. congressman, prepar- ing for the inauguration of the first black president. Black Girls Rock! by Beverly Bond Based on the annual award show broadcast for more than 10 years on BET, this book celebrates the cultural and historical achieve- ments of black women past and present, featur- ing striking pho- tographs and inspiring essays that will encourage readers to “own their magic.” Showdown by Wil Haygood Contentious Supreme Court nominations are common- place now, but there’s never been one as consequential as the five-day hearings for Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American justice, as Haygood dramatically cap- tures from first gavel to last. Negroland by Margo Jefferson Award- winning critic Jefferson grew up the daugh- ter of success- ful black parents in a world where the black upper class measured itself against whites while also fearing that any failure would speak poorly on its own race. “I call it Negroland,” she writes in this provocative memoir, “because I still find ‘Negro’ a word of wonders, glorious and terrible.” Radiant Child by Javaka Steptoe Though the Brooklyn-born artist Jean-Michel Basquiat died in 1988 at only 27, his collage-style art continues to resonate with and challenge audiences, and Steptoe’s award-winning biography is up to that challenge, introduc- ing the innovative artist to a young readership.
