localmatters / 9 T he Maplewood Town- ship Committee invites students in grades 8 through 12 who are resi- dents of Maplewood to apply to serve on its new Youth Advisory Commit- tee, which seeks to empower a diverse group of students and ensure their voices and perspectives are heard. The committee will be comprised of up to seven voting members and two Ma- plewood Township Committee non- voting members. The committee will meet once a month under Township Committee liaison supervision and its chair or vice chair will attend at least one Township Committee meeting each month. Youth Advisory Commit- tee members will have access to Town- ship Committee minutes and other relevant information. Applications for the committee are being accepted on a rolling basis; prospective candidates will be interviewed by The Township Committee. The Maplewood Police Depart- ment, in conjunction with the Rec- reation Department, Cultural Affairs, SOMA Film Festival and GCADA, will be hosting a free movie in the park August 23 at 6 p.m. Bring a blanket and chairs for a viewing of Minions at Memorial Park amphitheater. Festivi- ties also include games for children, a bouncy house, a magician and a brief message from the MPD and the Com- munity Service Bureau. Maplewood Porchfest, a free event in the Hilton section of town, takes place from 1-5 p.m. September 2 (rain date September 3) when all are welcome to roam the neighborhood, enjoying live music and entertainment on porches throughout. Schedules and maps will be available in front of the community center at DeHart Park at noon, when the event kicks off with music, balloons, a fundraiser bake sale and a re- hearsal for the “honk parade” (which starts at 12:45 p.m.), an event in which all are in- vited to make music and march. There will also be a complimentary jitney service running through the neigh- borhood.
