Durand Hedden House and Gar- den has two events this fall: On Oc- tober 21 at 2 p.m. Sandra Moss, presi- dent of the Medical History Society of New Jersey, will present Mad Hatters, The Radium Girls and The Asbestos Ho- tel, the story of three New Jersey in- dustrial toxins – mercury, radium and asbestos – and their effects on local workers, especially those in the hatting industry. The end of the war has sig- nificance in Maplewood because soon after it the newly named Township of Maplewood began plans to create its “Central Park” – Memorial Park – named to commemorate all the men and women who had served. To honor the local men who died, the communi- ty planted eight American Elms at the top of the natural amphitheater and marked them with a bronze plaque.
